Deadline Day Mini Evaluation.

So deadline day is looming, I feel this project has gone well overall. I have had a few challenges during this project, especially getting ill and loosing a lot of key time in the print room. I feel I struggled in the print room as pigment printing wasn't working and after the peer review I realised my prints weren't conveying my colour palette and mood. So with the little time I had left I decided to work with the process of mono printing, after experimenting with colours I decided to do most of my prints with this method. The prints became busier which related with the rest of my digital work, I feel that this process helped bring my collection together. I regret not going into the print room earlier and experimenting with colour more to produce more samples , but overall I am happy with my outcome.

Final Screen Print Collection.

Over the last few days I have been working endlessly in the print room trying to get at least a few prints I like. Every print I have been creating has taken a lot of time due to them all being done by using the process of mono printing. I decided to go with this method of printing as I felt it worked best with my collection and it gave across the mood and colours I was trying to convey. My prints are very busy but I think they work well due to the graphic and illustrative style of motifs.

Christo.

Surrounded Islands. Florida 1980-83
Th Gates. Central Park,  New York. 1979-05.

I have been finding it difficult to find research on artists work that I feel is relevant to my own. BUT today I have finally found an artist with work that is interesting and also similar to my own. Here are a few images of Christo's work. He combines the idea of geography with bold and colourful fabric. He works with skylines and cityscapes capturing them from different angles, covering and creating shapes with fabrics. I have very much enjoyed my research on Christo as it is very different form anything I have previously seen.

LDN Fashion Week Favourites.

Tom Ford A/W '13/'14

So this week amongst working on my project I have been following London Fashion Week. I have been looking at collections that I like but also collections I feel that relate to my work in some way. As ever designers that usually stick out the most to me are ones that heavily include print and most of all digital print. I watched Tom Ford's show and was really impressed by his collection, I wasn't expecting big things due to his recent absence from the industry, but I was genuinely surprised. His collection involved a lot of digital prints which isn't unusual of Tom as his collections are usually 'out there' and unique and don't always appeal to everyone, something that actually draws me into his brand. This collection has an Art Deco mixed with Native American vibe. His graphic, bold monochrome prints are similar to mine and give the same effect as what I hope my motifs aim to bring. His prints are like Pop Art and a bit comic book too, this illustrative structure is also key to my work. Ford combines illustrative drawing based prints with bold bright colour.

Peter Pilotto is one of my favourite designers, he is most known for his prints and this is because of his strong textile background which he has been enabled to enhance and bring to the fashion world. His last few collections have been very strong and this one was no let down. His ideas were based on Spanish Renaissance artists and he has tried to recreate the culture using similar colours and abstract marks in his prints. His prints are a great example of digital printing where he has used an original image then played around mirroring and repeating them to create something unique. I have tried to recreate this in my own digital prints to make sure I am creating something new and fresh each time.

Back Up and Running.

So I am feeling much better! My tonsils have decreased in size and returned to their original colour! I have been a bit worried about missing out on uni last week due to illness. I felt very behind on my work due to missing 3 key days in the print room. I feel I am lacking in screen prints so this week I am mainly concentrating on working in the print room. In my early experiments in the print room I worked with pigment paints. This wasn't working well for me as I found it hard to relate my colour palette and mood of my collection in the prints as I was only working with limited colour. Today I tried Mono printing, this type of printing uses reactive dyes which are painted directly onto the screen then fixed onto fabric with Manu Tex. I liked this method as I could use most of my colours and my prints have become busier and seem to connect to my digital prints more.

Inspirational space.

I am really enjoying working in the new building. The open plan structure of the studio space is refreshing and is very social. Working alongside other degree courses is inspiring and helps creativity massively.

Peer Review.

Hand painted and digital prints on A2 board.
Today was our peer review session. I placed my work onto two A2 boards to present them. Then in groups we had to go around looking at each others work thoroughly , writing notes on Sketchbook development, colour, presentation, selection and composition. I found this really helpful looking at others works , it was good to see what was being done and how people were interpreting the project in different ways. My feedback was good they said that my drawing was good and key to the base of my project. They also said my colour strip was interesting as it had a wide range of colours which will inevitably make my whole collection a lot more exciting. They said I did need to annotate my work more which I agree with, thus making my ideas a lot clearer. They said I should also use artists and designers that relate to my work. I have already began to look at the work of Holly Fulton as I feel the graphic aspect of her collection is similar to mine. The group critiquing my work mentioned the fact that not all of my screen prints have the same mood as my colour strip so I am going to look into this deeper, and try harder to keep in with the mood I want my collection to be.

Print Room

Today I have been working in the print room I have began by pigment printing. It hasn't gone as well as planned, I'm not the most patient person and the print room takes a lot of time. Between having to mix up the paints , washing and drying screens the day goes ridiculously quickly without a lot of work to show for it. I obviously cant use all my colours in the print room and I have been finding it difficult to chose combination of colours that still fit in with my final collection as a whole. I have also been finding composition challenging, choosing what motifs to put with each other and the placement of them. Below are examples of my pigment prints.
I have been very ill with tonsillitis this week and have missed a good few days of work in the print room which has set me back. I will hopefully feel better on monday after my antibiotics kicking in, so I am going to move onto reactive dyes as I feel the colours will relate to my project more and keep in theme with the mood of my colour strip.

Digital workshop.

Today I was working in photoshop, creating brushes and then using these in different ways. Enlarging , repeating, mirroring and layering them to create interesting patterns. I saved my colour palette that I had previously made from my sourced image and then put them into my print trying to create the mood of my colour strip. To begin with I didn't realise you had to use all the colours in your palette in your digital print, my prints were looking plain to begin with but after I started adding all of the colours and playing with the opacity my prints began to look more exciting.

Colour strip.

This is my colour strip I have chosen from a sourced image. I chose it because of the wide range of colour and use of vibrant colour. Today I also created a colour palette in photoshop and replaced the colour swatches with my own. Now I can start using these colours in my digital prints.

Motifs for photoshop prints.

Our task was to complete 6 new motifs to be used in photoshop. We had to cut around them using the lassoo tool and define brush preset to create brushes and use them to make patterns. I found drawing 6 new motifs quite hard as I didn't know where to get inspiration from. So I eventually looked back at my earlier research and drawings and worked into these so my new motifs linked in with my project as a whole.
