Topshop Designer T-shirts

Newgen 10
Limited Addition t-shirts
20 past Newgen Designers

Every year Topshop tends to do a range of designer T-shirts by the hottest most up and coming designers of the moment. I am always really excited to see what they come up with. A Tshirt design is quite simple so the print is massively important. The three examples below were my favourite from the collection, this being down to the print but also the type of material used. Louise Gray has used a silk material which I feel directs the collection towards the higher end of the market, the same market and audience I am aiming for in my brief.

Digital Print

I have been experimenting with my motifs and colour palette in photoshop. I have tried to keep with the idea of the digital montage and the defacing theme. I think the colours work well. The brightness of the orange against the deep greens. I like the contrast of the colours so I am going to try and carry that throughout the rest of my work.

Final Colour Palette

After hours of stress and frustration I finally found a colour palette I liked and one that worked well with my motifs. The combination of the dark greens and red together work well to create a rich and vibrant palette.

Defacing Ideas and graffiti

A few experimental drawings using graffiti and the idea of defacing on top of my original drawings. I wanted to add a splash of colour  to bring them to life.

Prabal Gurung Designer T-shirts

Prabal Gurung alongside creating collections for fashion week has produced a range of high end designer t-shirts, Some of which have the prints from his catwalk collections. I aim to create a range of t-shirts with the same idea. Maintaining the quality and trends of the catwalk.

Burton Machen x Obey Tshirts

Collaboration

In 2010 Burton Machen collaborated with obey, his defaced images were placed on a range of Tshirts, it is interesting to see how his images transferred to fabric and translated onto something wearable. The images speak for themselves so the simplistic placing of them work well .

Burton Machen

Urban Evolution
Portraits Project

Burton Machen took a series of photographs of famous and political people and placed them on the streets of New York and saw how they would evolve over time by factors such as graffiti and weathering. I am going to deface some of my images and drawings , Burton Machen project Urban evolution was good to look at as it was interesting what graffiti ideas people came up with that I could use to feed into my own work.

Work Experiance

For the past week I have been working on the set of Casualty in the costume and wardrobe department. I worked from 8-7 everyday organising the stock for each character but also shadowing the costume designer who was working on a 6 week block. I was there to learn about their job and what they did. I helped out with costume continuity making sure the character looked exactly the same in each shot. I learnt about how they went out and bought for each cast member. I also got to help out in the special effects and prosthetics department. This was a very creative area of the bbc studio. The costume designers were freelance only working on this block for 6 weeks. It was good to see what the job entailed and to gain experience in tv so if in future I knew what I was letting myself in for if I pursued this career path.

Colour palette rethink .

I have been really struggling with my work over the past few days, I was finding it hard to get the right colour combinations. I have had to change my colour palette twice due to them not corresponding and working with my motifs. Both these colour palettes have to bright and pastelly colours rather than the richer royal feel I am going for.

Ideas

I want to combine geometric shapes to bring the tradition features in Religion up to date and modern. I'm going to be looking at figures and I find the gravity and defacing of these images interesting.

Dolce Gabbana Fall 2013

I like the regal feel of this collection, I want to try and cretae this in my own work maybe bringing  in the gold using foil prints.

Visual research

I have started drawing so I can start making them into motifs to take further and explore in digital and screen print.

Visual Research

Here are my own images of the Cathedral on my road. I am so lucky to have this right on my doorstep and I continuously take it for granted. I took pictures of certain features and patterns I could use in my own prints.

Written Brief

BRIEF

I am aiming to create a series of prints using digital print. I will try to create a series of sample prints for a fashion collection, I am going to create a range of high end graphic silk t-shirts, these will be displayed in a series of flats alongside digital fabric and paper samples.
The visual research I will undertake will be primary research in the form of photography, drawing and also market research. I am planning to explore typography looking into the idea of religion, ie figures, religious buildings, features and writings. I have been looking into current trends , these have included digital montages and the idea of defacing features. I am going to combine both of these ideas in my project.
I am going to research heavily at the start of project experimenting with a range of primary visual research so I am not limited with my range of prints and outcomes. I am going to draw from observation so I have a range of motifs I can take into photoshop and illustrator advancing and further the skills I have previously learnt.
I am going to  work with techniques I learnt from workshops in the last project and further develop them in this brief.
I want to create a fashion collection for woman age range 25-35. Women of the working profession who can afford to spend a bit more on quality garments. I am going to create a range of designer t-shirts for the high end market. (t-shirt range) They are going to be silk t-shirts, (see Prabal Gurung t-shirt range). I have been inspired by Aquilano Rimondi's Spring 2014 collection. I like the vibrancy in the print and the graphic montage incorporated alongside the more traditional images.

I am going to do the Bradford textiles live brief. Working with a digital print for fashion. Working with a garment in mind creating fashion illustrations to display my print . I am going to work under pressure giving myself limited time . I have also undertaken a placement during this project so I am going to produce a report on this, alongside evidence of emails corresponding with companies regarding future internships.
